For many years, marriage and the home has been under fire in our society. As God’s people, it is imperative that we have a good, basic understanding of what the Bible says about marriage. Consider the following message from Jesus about marriage…
Marriage Was Designed By God. In Matthew 19, the Pharisees have come to Jesus, and they have some questions on their mind about the subject of marriage, especially in regards to divorce and remarriage. As Jesus lays the foundation, He reminds them of the origin of marriage. “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4). The “he” to which Jesus is referring is God. Notice how many times the phrase “LORD God” is referenced in Genesis 2:18-25 as we learn for the first time about marriage.
Marriage Was Designed For A Man And A Woman. Notice a second phrase found in Matthew 19:4, “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female.” God has always designed marriage to be between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:18-25).
Marriage Was Designed For The Mature. As Jesus continues His sermon on the topic of marriage He says, “For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” (Matthew 19:5). They are leaving one home to create a new home. Leaving involves maturity.
Marriage Was Designed To Be Till Death Do Us Part. Too often today, many seem to look at this relationship like buying a car. Well, when I get tired of this one, I will trade it in for a newer model that I like better. God never designed marriage with this mentality. Instead Jesus says this, “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:6). The Apostle Paul would write to the Romans that marriage was a lifelong commitment (Romans 7:2). Each person that enters into the marriage relationship needs to have this mentality.
The points mentioned are just a few basic facts concerning marriage. Please understand, no matter what changes may come our way, God’s plan for marriage will remain the same.
